Such “girls from the cover” from the Australian women’s glossy magazine Women’sWeekly (and maybe the whole world gloss) was never before. For the July issue, the producers organized a photo session of Turia Pitt – a well-known sportswoman in the country who has 65% of her skin with deep burns.
So Turia returned to the modeling business, from which she had to leave three years ago – because of injuries theoretically incompatible with life.
And her love saved and returned her.
In 2011, 24-year-old sportswoman and fashion model Turia Pitt, the former nominee for the title of “Miss Australia”, applied to participate in the big marathon race RacingThePlanet (RTP).
She was refused, because she could not make an entrance fee – to pay the organizers $ 1600. However, a few days before the race, Turia and several athletes were called from the organizing committee and offered to participate for free: there was a shortage of runners, and the marathon itself was in jeopardy. Pitt immediately changed all her plans to definitely get into the race: it was a dream.
For the second reference point, the marathon route went into the forest belt and into the mountains. At the top of the hill at the same time took six: four men, Turia and another woman 35 years old. They were almost at the top, when they heard “a terrible sound, like the roar of a huge heavy truck.” It was a fire that broke out somewhere behind. A minute later the fire closed around the runners. Then Turia remembers everything in fits and starts: as she sat down on the ground, for some reason she hid herself in a jacket, how it became “hotter, hotter, hotter”, how, without carrying this heat, she jumped up and tried to escape …
… And flew into the fire. “Then it was just black and hot.”
The helicopter of doctors arrived for runners only four hours later. All this time, male athletes saved the lives of both girls (the second participant also suffered serious injuries). At the top of the rock, where there was no fire, they covered their sun-rays with their clothes, moistened with drinking water, tried to bring them to life.
Before the fire
Turia Pitt lost all her fingers and brush on her right hand. The left, fortunately, survived. Later, in the hospital, the doctors had to amputate the model and the athlete’s leg. In the early days, doctors at all did not promise that she would survive. And when the critical moment passed, it became clear that in the hospitals the girl would spend the next few years.
And if youth and good health helped her to get out of this most difficult, life-threatening early days, then for the first time she should look at herself in the mirror, master the prosthesis and in three years appear on the cover of the glossy Turia, as she herself admits, was able only Of love.
Turia and Michael Hoskin met while still in school, but became a couple only at 21. And already at the very beginning of the relationship, Michael realized that Turia was the girl he needed.
They worked together in mining. About what happened to the girl, Michael found out only when the helicopter was flying to the hospital and the doctors were fighting for her life in the sky.
Seeing her disfigured skin was the easiest test of all that Michael had to face. After all, Pitt after amputation could not help but run – to walk the way she used to. She was almost incapable of washing herself, eating, serving herself, could not open the bottle with water, leave without help to the toilet. She needed to be around 24 hours a day. And Michael went for it. He taught her to walk again, dressed, was literally her hands and feet. During two years. Until she recovered.
The girl had to learn to live with a new face, more precisely – without a face. Learn to go out, be among people, feel the views. But next to her was a man, through which she was able to cope with depression. Michael, her boyfriend, quit his job to be with the girl every minute, look after and support. And most importantly, he continued to love her.
How does Michael relate to the new appearance of Turia?
“She does not want people to pity her. He wants to just continue to live. You know, she’s beautiful. She’s amazing. ”
“It’s still the same Turia, only the skin has changed.”
It would seem that this is so simple – the same girl, only with different skin! But how many people are capable of such an attitude? Thank you, Michael.
How does Michael relate to the new appearance of Turia?
“She does not want people to pity her. WANTS TO SIMPLY CONTINUE TO LIVE. YOU KNOW, IT’S BEAUTIFUL. SHE IS AMAZING. ”
“THIS IS THE SAME TURY, ONLY THE SKIN CHANGED.”
Now Hoskin speaks about his beloved: “She is beautiful!” – and it does not look taut. Because further he continues admiringly: “She has a crazy energy. She tries to be active on an equal level with me. She gets up every day at seven o’clock in the morning to walk and swim to physiotherapy, she spends this time with me and forbids her to regret and give in to her. She’s incredible. You can not call it “surviving”. All this time she did not try to survive, she tried to fully live each day. ”
There are still several cosmetic operations to be performed in Turia. The most terrible, the most frightening, they with Michael passed – and stayed together.
Track and field athletics for Turia Pitt for obvious reasons is now closed. But there is always a way out.
With her prosthesis the girl re-learned the bicycle. Now she is driving from Sydney to a neighboring city for pleasure and at local competitions.
He is also involved in 20 km swim. And she says that she is happy that she has only one working hand-let her have to be completely retrained to do everything left.
And this year, Pitt was able to climb the Great Wall of China and for eight days to go through a specified route of 95 km in length with obstacles in the framework of a charity event.
This act was covered not only by the Australian, but also by the world media. Thanks to her promotion, Pitt collected $ 200,000 in donations. All this money she sent to the development of restorative medicine for people with severe injuries in developing countries.
– This experience showed me how important it is for me to interact with other people now, how important mutual assistance and support is, “says the sportswoman. – Other participants of the action always helped me where the second hand is needed. Without them, I would not have managed.
Turia Pitt has already released a biographical book. Now she receives a master’s degree in engineering and gives seminars as a motivational speaker. Forecasts as to whether she will ever be able to get rid of her scars, doctors do not give the girl.
By the way, Turia Pitt was able to prove to the parliamentary commission on the investigation of the fire incident that the organizers of the race are indirectly to blame for what happened and to seek compensation. The marathon took place in September, this is a fire-dangerous period for those places. And for security reasons, the event should have been postponed or canceled altogether, but there was no question about it. Before the start, athletes were warned of the danger of snake bites and encounters with crocodiles, but nothing was said about the fires, although the instructors were familiar with the climatic conditions. And to the emergency situation the organizers and special services were not ready: this follows from the fact that the helicopter with the medical personnel suffered had to wait unacceptably long.
By the way, until Pitt proved the guilt of the leadership of RTP, she met with them almost no desire to atone for their inaction. All she received from the organizing committee, being in the hospital – a postcard, a few sympathetic emails and chocolates.
This summer, Michael made a proposal to Turia during a holiday in the Maldives, donating a diamond ring that he bought four years ago.
“When Turia was in the intensive care unit, I went and bought a diamond ring. I showed it to my father when we stood by her bed in the clinic, and said: “If Turia survives, I’ll marry her.” He looked at me and said: “Well done, guy.”
After that, Michael gave the ring to his father for safekeeping, and left the job himself, he remained courting the girl in the clinic, because she could not do anything on her own, even to dress and eat.
Michael: “I wanted to wait for the right moment – I was not going to rush and make an offer right after what happened.”
Turia: “The fire made me more grateful for everything I have, for every day I lived. Before, I did not think about anything, going to bed with my boyfriend. Now I think – how lucky I am that I fall asleep next to this beautiful man. He’s a good man, I’m very lucky to be with him. Every day when I wake up with him, it’s a great day. He loves me for who I am. “
“At the moment I’m full of love. Michael is my half, I’ve known this for years. All this time we talked about marriage, but still the proposal was a surprise for me. ”
How did this happen? The couple made a night walk on the boat and suddenly announced that just below them floated the manta ray. Feeling that the right moment came, Michael snatched the ring that he always carried with him, and asked Turia to give him the honor of becoming his wife. They marked this event unusually – they put on masks and tubes and swam with the ramp for an hour.
“It was magical,” they say.
“The past 4 years were the hardest for both of us and only during the last 6 months we have returned to normal life, to the relations that we had before. For us it’s a good time. Now we are planning a wedding next year – a big holiday, not a romantic event. This is an opportunity to thank friends and our families for their help. ” Turia’s plans: “I’m not against improving the appearance with the help of operations.
If I need 1000 more operations, I’ll do it. On average, I have 3 operations per year and I will stop operating when I do my best. This is the goal, but not the only one. ”
However, sometimes operations do not go as planned. At the beginning of the year, Turia reconstructed her nose, but during the operation the girl stopped breathing. Turia’s mother and her boyfriend were waiting for the operating room.
“When we heard the resuscitation signal when heart failure and the senior nurse ran to the operating room, we thought we had lost it. I said, “God, do not you dare. This girl fought so hard. I struggled to get out of bed to walk to accept the situation – do not you dare to do this to her. ”
Now Turia lives full life, surfing, cycling, traveling, working. And is a member of a charitable organization that deals with reconstructive surgery in developing countries. Turia advocates, drawing attention to the problems of people affected by injuries or illnesses. Someone is interested to see the girl in the burns and find out what happened to her. And to someone her example will help to cope with their own tragedy, because support is the most important for those who have lost confidence.
