This is a story about three friends and how modern technology has helped one of them. We’ve seen countless movies about what it’s like to get stuck on a desert island. Pleasant little!
Now imagine that Adam Jones, who spent 9 long years on an uninhabited island, had to survive and was saved by using one of the most amazing inventions of our time – Google Earth!
It all started in 2006, when Adam Jones and two of his friends went on a trip. They planned to swim from their native Liverpool to Hawaii, crossing the Atlantic Ocean and the Panama Canal. The first part of the voyage passed without problems, but then the unforeseen happened.
When they reached the Pacific Ocean, they fell into a violent storm that damaged their yacht and electronic equipment on board. Adam’s friends were washed overboard, and he himself lost consciousness from the impact, and the boat was carried for 17 days across the ocean until it was nailed to an uninhabited island.
The first days were the most difficult for Adam – he was completely unprepared.
He had to stretch the supply of water from the yacht for 2 weeks, and then build a device to collect water by drop per minute. He also collected and stored rainwater.
When his unskilful shelter, built from the parts of the yacht, collapsed, he had to build a new one. It took him 11 weeks to knock down a tree with a sharp shell.
The main problem was subsistence.
Adam found eight wild goats in search of food. But hunting them without equipment was difficult. He tried to make bow and arrows, but they were not strong enough; He was lucky – he found a goat, stuck in the bushes.
It was unpleasant for Adam to kill goats. According to him, it took him a full 15 minutes to kill the animal, and he was very disgusted. But he received about 50 kilograms of meat.
Hunting required considerable physical effort.
Adam tells us that he had to sweat to keep himself in shape. He wrung out, pulled himself up on a tree branch and squatted with stones on his shoulders.
He trained every day. After the exercises, he made a 300 meter run along the shore. But the most difficult for Adam were mental anguish.
He was literally going mad with loneliness.
The constant feeling of isolation and the growing confidence that he will never be saved, have eaten him from the inside. Therefore, he laid out the 3-meter inscription SOS, but found it not sufficiently visible.
In the end, he cleared a large area and laid out a huge inscription SOS. Adam hoped that she would be noticed by some flying airplane.
And finally salvation came.
One day, Adam was surprised to hear the noise of an airplane overhead. He began to wave his hands furiously, and dropped the packet from the plane. In the package, Adam found fresh water, walkie-talkies, food and a first aid kit.
When he switched on the radio and contacted the pilot, it was the first human voice he had heard in 9 long years. During the conversation, he asked how he was found.
It turned out that a teenager in Minnesota saw his “signal” SOS on Google Earth and told the authorities!
