In the Amazon rainforest there is a hill that occupies 1 hectare of land. It is called Montegrande and at first glance it looks like an ordinary hill with steep slopes. However, local farmers began to build houses on the hill. And then they began to dig and find shards of old pots, which turned out to be more than 1000 years old. In 2010, archaeologist Quirino Olivera and his team began to study the Montegrande hill more thoroughly and soon discovered that it was not a hill at all. It was a massive pyramid, built by a disappeared civilization, whose age exceeds 3000 years.
The Theory of Uninhabited Forests of the Amazon
The hill-pyramid of Montegrade changed everything. It used to be that the forests of the Amazon are a place that has always been a little in need, and only nomads stayed here. Each fragment of archaeological finds spoke of the fact that no one here permanently lived. However, discoveries like Montgrede change history. Now it is believed that almost 5 million people could live here. They created civilizations and cultures, hitherto unknown. The only way to know who these people are is to study their remains.
The Forgotten Civilization
The people who built the Montegrande had a very developed society . They did not just erect one pyramid and left. First they built it in 1000 AD, then refined and rebuilt it at least eight times. Before the collapse of their empire, they lived in this place for more than a thousand years. They were able to build almost 2-meter protective walls and “office buildings” for their rulers. Along the river stood whole streets of houses, the inhabitants had their own religion, and the settlement itself was part of a complex trading network stretching across the territory of modern Peru.
The spiral temple
At the top of the hill is a spiral of rocks, folded in the form of a huge snake or shell of a snail. On this spiral you can walk like a labyrinth. Each step leads you down until you reach the center, which is 12 meters below the first step. In the center of the spiral, people who once lived here burned fires, probably for religious purposes, and there is reason to believe that these were drugs. Archaeologists have found spoons and stupas still containing the remains of hallucinogenic plant seeds vilca . The plant is not local, but clearly imported.
These seeds can be the cause of hobbies with spirals, because when they are used, people see spiral lights. Local priests may have taken this for a divine vision, and hallucinations affected the culture. In addition, Snail shells are scattered all over Montegrande, and a spiral shape was present almost everywhere.
The Lord of the Snails
One and a half kilometers from Montegrande the researchers discovered the second pyramid where they were found Remains of 22 children. By their bones it was possible to determine that they were malnourished and suffering from disease. Perhaps they were brought here to die or to shamans for treatment.
A six-year-old child with his domestic pig is buried here, and a young mother is lying with a newborn child, but both are beheaded. Also found were the bones of a clergyman, whom archaeologists called “The Lord of Snails,” and he must have been an important person. He died 2,800 years ago, and was buried from head to foot with snails, only 180 shells. His face looks to the east, to the rising sun and towards the new day.
Ruins and bones – Everything that remains of Civilization
From local people there was not one written the words. It was not known whether they had literacy and writing in general. We do not know their names. We do not know their thoughts about life, love and death. We do not know why they came to these places and why they died or left here. Until now, we did not even know that they existed, or that there were some ancient civilizations in the Amazon rainforest. All that we have is the ruins and bones left by people who have been forgotten for the past 2000 years.
